VISUALIZATION/ MAPPING/ GIS
The Design Thinking seminar is the pre-requisite course for the Degree Project Thesis studio. The objective of the seminar is to implement prototypical thinking to the analysis of Saint Louis as a site on a macro-scale, and then subsequently propose an architectural argument for a site and program. The design research was used in the creation of an 85 page book.
Industrial Fold began by looking at Saint Louis as conditions of folding. The conditions of folding or blending embodied three primary categories of densities, textures, and culture. Three different matrix that correspond to these conditions are then devised in order to map out these traits within the Saint Louis City boundaries. Speculative blending of different conditions address the potential of an architectural solution that reflects the character of Saint Louis. The aggregate analysis thus create an analytical framework for Saint Louis, in which the architectural proposal addresses the characteristics of densities, texture, and culture.
The taxonomies reveal that Saint Louis is a city oriented towards industrial production with many of the important cultural artefacts reflecting industrial use. Thus, a recycling facility is proposed to account for the continued use of Saint Louis as an important center of distribution and industrial production. The recycling center is programmatically involved in the blending and transformation of waste densities and textures, is part of the transportation infrastructure involving the Mississippi River, and fundamentally has the potential to blend industrial production with public engagement.
